MINI SEVENS

Congrats to the girls and boys teams who got through to the next round of the Cumann na mBunscol Mini-7's competition after comprehensive wins against Coolbock NS and Kilross NS.  The next round was played in wet and windy conditions at the Centre of Excellence in Scarden.  In spite of the rough weather, both our girls and boys team played to their best unfortunately, after two matches for the girls and three for the boys they were unlucky not to secure a place in the next round.  In spite of this, all members of the teams played their best and exhibited a great sense of sportsmanship!  Well done everyone!

MATHS WEEK

Maths Week was a focus in our classroom from the 12th - 16th October this year.  We did crazy brainteasers and fun puzzles that entertained us for this brilliant maths week. We tested our parents on them and enjoyed watching them vainly try to solve them. Each day was started with a game of countdown thanks to Aoibhin Whelehan who gave us a run for our money by giving us newer and harder ones everyday! While each day our Maths lessons saw us racking our brains solving maths sentences given to us by our teacher.

TSI - Transactional Strategy Instruction

We have started a new programme called TSI. TSI stands for Transactional Strategy Instruction. The focus of this project is to let the students learn to comprehend their english reading and teach each other. There are three main jobs for the children to take on;the leader, the strategist and the questioner.

LEADER: Is in charge of the group and coding sheets

STRATEGIST:Is in charge of ensuring the correct strategy is being studied by the group

QUESTIONER: Is in charge of making sure the group can ask sufficent questions and appropriate questions about the piece.

We had a special visitor (Maire Love) who came in to see us in action. She was delighted with the results and hopes to visit us again.

SEPTEMBER 2015

Welcome everyone to our new school year.  Already we have been extremely busy so read on if you want to get a flavour of what we have been up to!

TRIP TO UNION ROCK

As part of our History class we headed off to Union Rock on 28th September.  We have been studying about the 1798 Rebellion so to help get a feel for what happened we donned our walking shoes and set off!  Our first stop brought us up to Union Rock on a glorious, sunny day and we had panoramic views over Ballisodare Bay, the Ox mountains, the Dartry mountains and Collooney.  There we learned about the arrival of the French under the command of General Humbert and their meeting with the Garrison from Sligo.  Hearing the stories as we looked out over the area really brought it all to life!  From there we set off to the Teeling monument which commerates Belfastman Bartholamew Teeling and is on the site of the skirmish that took place.  We had a wonderful day which helped us see just how much history is on our doorstep!

Our First School Assembly of the Year

As our school year got underway we decided to get use our School Assemblies as a way of showing a little flavour of our class to the rest of the school.  We chose the topic of the Rugby World Cup and spent the first couple of weeks preparing a Powerpoint Display and an Oral Presentation on that topic.  We spoke about amny areaas including : the History of Rugby, The Irish Rugby Team, The Webb Ellis Trophy and Fun Facts about the game of rugby.  We were a little nervous but all our work and preparation paid off and our presentation was a resounding success!

SCHOOL CHOIR

To get our school year off to the best possible start we celebrated our start of year school mass at 7.30pm in St. Teresa's Church on Thursday, 23rd September.  Our school choir and those who participated in the ceremony had spent a great deal of time preparing and this helped ensure a wonderful ceremony.  Many thanks to all who took time out of their day to join us in our celebrations.

GUITAR LESSONS

Guitar Lessons are now well underway and Karl is busy helping us to develop our guitar playing skills!

Athletics Fest 2015

Well done to all students who participated in the SuperValu Athletics Fest at Sligo IT on Friday, 24th September.  After all the time which they spent training during and after school they were able to give a great account of themselves in every section they entered.  Congratulations in particular to our Senior Girls Team (Aoibhín, Ella, Kayla and Emma) who qualified for the Senior Girls final and were unlucky not to be placed after a fantastic effort!  Great work everyone!

As we received our 5th Green Schools flag this year, we celebrated in style with some events in the school including the first screening of the 6th Class Movie on Road safety.  We were thrilled with the response to our work and really enjoyed spreading our Road safety message in such a novel way.  On the day of our Green Flag raising we also had a guided tour of the bank of the Garavogue with nature expert Michael Bell.
