We have been very busy over the last couple of months and have lots to share with you so keep an eye out for new updates in the coming weeks.
Christmas 2013:
We were very excited in the lead up to Christmas and had great fun doing lots of Christmas art.We also wrote our letters to Santa. Have a look
January 2014
We read stories such as Matilda and The Twits from Katie's Roald Dahl book that Santa brought her.
As part of our Building Bridges Programme we read one of our favourites 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'.
It was great fun making the sounds as the family went through the various places looking for bears. We also did some art about it where we drew the various scenes of the story.
We also read all about The Rainbow Fish who had lovely shiny scales but although he had so many he didn't want to share them with any of the other fish and so found himself all alone. He soon figured out that if he shared his scales with all the other fish he soon had lots of friends to play with and wasn't lonely any more.
We made hand prints of the rainbow fish. They, like the rainbow, are lovely, bright and colourful. See below for yourselves
In January we also went on a colour hunt around the yard as part of science where we had to find items for each colour on our colour wheel. Kitty and Ms. McGourty came with us. We worked in different groups and it was great fun. Have a look at some of the things we found.
February 2014
Grandparent's Day
February began with Grandparent's Day on the 3rd February. We prepared for the day by finding out all about the toys and games our grandparents played with when they were small. We also brought in pictures of our grandparents and made memories of times with our grandparents.
Many grandparents and even some great grandparents came on the day where we had a lovely prayer service conducted by Fr. Vincent followed by a cuppa and a chat. It was agreed by all that it was a very enjoyable day and many thanks goes to all those who were able to be there, to all those who sent in pictures and artefacts and to the ladies who served the teas and coffees. The success of the day was a culmination of everybody's efforts and we look forward to next year's event. Here are some pictures of the day.
March 2014
World Book Day: We had great fun dressing up as some of our favourite characters from our favourite books. Amongst those favourite characters who made an appearance on the day were Snow White, Cinderella, Captain Jack Sparrow, Superman, Fireman Sam, Little Red Riding Hood, The Witch, to name but a few. We had great fun guessing who everyone was. We gathered in Ms. Mulligan's room to have a parade for everyone and to see the other costumes that the older children wore. We saw Dennis the Menace, Pippi Longstocking, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Have a look at the picture below for yourself and see can you guess who is who!
Football Trainers: Shauna & Thomas joined us at the end of February and continued with us each Thursday right up until the end of May. We loved having them with us and we learned lots of new games and ball techniques. Have a look below at some of the fun we had with them.
We learned lots about Spring during February, March & April. We learned all about the Lifecycle of the Frog, daffodils, sheep and lambs amongst other things. We did some lovely art work around the theme of Spring. See for yourselves.
April 2014:
In the beginning of April we had Friendship Week. During the week we tried hard to make a new friend or to play with someone different every day. we learned a poem about 'Making Friends' and drew a nice picture about being friends. We had a great week and got lots of stickers for being friendly to each other.
We were also very busy doing science experiments for the Discover Science Award competition. We had great fun playing with magnets, finding out how strong some magnets were and exploring which materials were attracted to magnets and which were not. We also had great fun with Miss Keaveney experimenting with ways of making things move. We learned lots about moving air. We can't see it, feel it or taste it but sometimes we might be able to hear it! We discovered through our experimenting that if we rolled up things like tinfoil and paper into a ball that they moved faster when we blew them or fanned them than when they were flat. This was true also of a ball versus a block. The ball moved faster and easier than the block because it is round and the block is not. Have a look at the pictures to see the fun we were having.
Science Fair, Thursday 10th April: A very successful, the first ever, Science Fair was held in our school on Thursday, 10th April 2014. It was nerve wracking getting organised for it but it was well worth it in the end. We were divided into groups and we each had a topic or an experiment to talk about for example, the lifecycle of the frog, moving air, creating and experimenting with shadows, taking fingerprints, magnets and dancing raisins to name but a few. it was great fun and we had a great turn out of parents. We were delighted to be able to show them all we have learned. Some parents loved having their fingerprints taken. Have a look at the pictures below.
Easter Egg Hunt: Friday, 11th June saw Jamie's Mother bring in eggs of all shapes and sizes and we hid them and had a hunt just before we went home. What a fabulous idea!
May 2014:
Congratulations to 2nd Class on making their First Holy Communion on Saturday, 3rd May 2014 and to 6th Class on making their Confirmation on Saturday, 10th May 2014 and to Ms. Kearins who had a little baby girl.
June 2014:
What a wonderful day we had at sports day on Friday 6th June. We were very lucky to have four very inventive & enthusiastic instructors from Olympic for Schools with us for our Sports Day. We did a huge variety of activities on the day some of which included the egg & spoon race, the sack race, an obstacle course and water races at the end to name but a few. Have a look at the pictures below and see for yourself all the fun that was had on the day.
