Science Fair - IT Sligo - 10th November 2015

Well done to all the students of Ms. Mulligan's 3rd and 4th classes and Ms. Kearins 5th and 6th classes who took part in the Science Fair on Sunday last as part of National Science Week.

 

   

 

 

 

 

                                         NATIONAL FLAG PRESENTATION

As part of the 1916 centenary, an officer from our Defence Forces will visit the school tomorrow 5th November to present us with our National Flag together with  a copy of the 1916 Proclamation.

 

The presentation ceremony will be held in the school at 10.45 and will last approximately 30 mins.  Following introductions the Defence Forces team will read the Proclamation and the flag will be presented to the school.  Time permitting the children will have an opportunity to ask questions.

 

The flag will not be raised in the school tomorrow, this will take place on Proclamation Day Wednesday 16th March 2016.

Athletics

 

Well done to all who participated in the schools athletics event on Friday in the IT.  We had a very enjoyable and two of our teams, the Junior Girls and Senior Girls got through to the finals.

 

 

 

 

Good Luck to those participating in the Schools Cross Country on this Saturday 3rd October.

JANUARY 2015

Gymnastics

Gymnastics will take place for all pupils in the Hall starting on Thursday 15th January and every following Thursday for a 6 week period.

 

RSE Programme

Susan Gilmartin will commence the RSE Programme for 5th and 6th Classes starting on Thursday 15th January at 1.30 pm.  Further talks will be given on Thursday 22nd January and Thursday 29th January.

 

Road Safety

A speaker from the Road Safety Authority will give a talk to all pupils on Wednesday 18th March 2015 on this important topic.

 

Grandparents Day -  Monday 26th January - Welcome to all Grandparents

 

 

Tuesday 6th January 

 -  There will be Mass together with Choir today in St. Therese's Church at 11.30 a.m.  All are welcome.

Our recent Odd Socks/Odd Shoes campaign raised €100 for the Hand in Hand Charity.  Many thanks to those who donated and well done to all who took part.

Football skills training with Pat Kilcoyne which has been taking place since September is coming to an end.

 

Hurling:    

Hurling training with Benny resumed last Friday much to the delight of all.

 

Clothing Collection:   

A reminder re clothing collection taking place on Thursday 13th November.  If you know of anyone who needs clothes collected please contact the school before Wednesday or conact Jacqueline Conway or Finbar Diamond.

 

Cake Sale: 

Cake Sale is being held in the hall on this Sunday 16th November after 11:30 a.m. mass.  Many thanks to those who have indicated already thier availability to help and what they are going to bake.  More items are still needed so if you have forgotten or lost your slip of paper please let us know as soon as possible.  It is imperative that there is a whole school effort towards this in order to make it successful.

 

Parent/Teacher Meetings:  

Parent / Teacher Meetings take place next week.  School finishes at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday 18th November and Thursday 20th November to facilitate these.

GAAAmigos.    Well done to the pupils who participated in GAAmigos in Ballymote on 10th March.  Congratulations on representing your school so well.

 

No Cars Tuesday (NCT) .   Started on March 4th with a great turnout of parents, children and grandparents.  Lisa McDaniel from An Taisce, Alison the Community Garda, and Fr. Vincent - all were in attendance for the launch.  The sun shone and everyone wore their high vis jackets.  It was a very enjoyable morning.  Thanks to all concerned.  Looking forward to seeing you all again next Tuesday!   For safety reasons as many parents as possible are asked to join in any morning they are free.  Pictures to follow in the local paper.

February 2014

Coirm Gael LinnBest wishes to all the 5th & 6th class pupils who will be performing “An Piobaire Hamlin” in the HawkswellTheatre on Tuesday, 11th March.  Their performance will begin at 1.15pm sharp so any parents hoping to attend are asked to be there in time as the schedule tends to be rigorously adhered to.

2nd Class - First Communion:  Best wishes to 2nd class Communicants who will make their First Holy Communion  on 3rd May.  First Confessions will take place on Tuesday, 11th March at 7pm in St. Teresa’s Church – we wish them all a wonderful day.

Indoor Hurling:     Well done to our Boys and Girls Indoor Hurling teams who competed in the first round of the Indoor Hurling competition this week.  The Girls team, who are reigning County Champions have successfully made it through to the next round while our boys team drew their first match and failed to qualify for the next round in spite of a valiant effort in their 2nd game against Geevagh.  Congratulations and well done to all our pupils on the sportsmanship they exhibited and best of luck to the girls in the next round.

6th Class - Confirmation:    6th class pupils have now completed the workshops in the Parish Programme “You Shall be My Witness”.  Parents and pupils are reminded that the next stage of the preparation process for Confirmation will be the “Commitment Ceremony” which will take place on the 4th March so it is important that they would all attend.  We also need a parent of one of the Confirmation Candidates to do a short reading at the Confirmation ceremony on 10th May so any parent willing to volunteer for this job is asked to contact the school please as soon as possible.

Football Coaching:  The annual Student Coaching Scheme in conjunction with Cumann na mBunscol Co. Shligigh, Sligo County Board and Sligo IT is beginning this week.  Coaching will be given to all classes from Junior Infants – 6th class (weather permitting) so pupils are asked to wear appropriate footwear on Thursdays.

Hurling Coaching:  We are very fortunate to have Benny Kenny join us again this year to work on the Hurling skills of the older pupils.  Coaching sessions will take place on a Tuesday so appropriate footwear to be brought in please.

Well Done:  Congratulations to Darra O’Loughlin (6th class) who took part in Round 2 of the Cumann na mBunscol Place Kicking competition in the Teeling Centre on the 26th February and has qualified for the next round.  Best of luck in the next stage of the competition. 

N.C.T. (No Car Tuesday):    Our Green Schools “ No Car Tuesday” initiative will begin on Tuesday March 4th.   Parents are encouraged to walk a short distance with their children to school on that morning – suggested parking places include – St. Michael’s pitch, the hall or down in the village (and don’t forget those High-Vis jackets!!!).  For those who are interested in coming together we can meet at St. Michael’s Pitch at 9am or you can join us en route to launch NCT day.  Many thanks to Ms. Wynne for all her hard work in getting this initiative up and running!

 World Book Day:  This event is being celebrated on Thursday, 6th March.  We are inviting all children to dress up as their favourite book character and bring in the book on that day.  We will have a “character parade” during the day.

Seachtain na Gaeilge:  St. Teresa’s N.S. will celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge from 10th – 14th March.  Events will include a Céilí Mór, Tráth na gCeist, Coirm Gael Linn etc so parents are encouraged to use a “cúpla focal” when visiting the school! M’ás feidir!

Enrolment Forms:  Enrolment Forms are currently available from the school.  If you know of anyone who is hoping to enrol their child with us in September but may not have heard that forms are available, please let them know that they can call to the school or phone us at 0719164939. 

Guest Speaker:  We will have a guest speaker from the RSA joining us on Thursday, 6th March.  She will be talking to all the pupils about road safety and the importance of following the Rules of the Road.  Many thanks to Ms. Wynne who is organising this event.

Swimming: Swimming Lessons for 1st & 2nd class pupils will begin on the 19th March for 6 weeks in Sligo Sports Complex.  Parents are reminded to send in the swimming gear, towels etc with pupils each Wednesday.  Please ensure that all outstanding monies are forwarded to the school by the 14th March.

Grandparents Day:    Many thanks to all who joined us for Grandparents Day.  Sincere thanks also to the parents who helped with the teas & coffee and all who donated some baked goods, biscuits etc.  Well done to Ruth & Ms. McHugh for organising the event.

 No Cars Tuesday(NCT) starts on March 4th 2014  as part of  the  travel theme  for the Green Schools programme. Please meet at St Michaels pitch at 9am where parents & pupils will walk to school together. SANDY KELLY VISITS OUR SCHOOL MAY 2013

 

 

E-Safety Workshop (parents of 5th & 6th class pupils)

Please note that Coola Post Primary School will be hosting a workshop on the topic of E-Safety in the Canteen of Coola Post Primary school on 7th March from 7.30 - 8.30pm.  The workshop will be hosted by Katherine Mc Cann and will cover topics including Internet Safety, Cyber Bullying etc..  Parents of 5th&6th class pupils in the local area have been invited to attend.

Safer Internet Day: is a global drive to promote a Safer Internet for all users, especially young people and  is celebrated in Ireland on Tuesday, 5th February 2013. In order to participate in this event,  the staff of St. Teresa's N.S. will be spending some time speaking to the children about internet safety. National Parents Council - Talk for Parents:

The National Parents Council has invited all Parents to attend a talk in the Education Centre Sligo Institute of Technology, Ballinode, Sligo on Tuesday 19th February at 7.30pm about "The Importance of Minding Your Mind!"  The guest speaker for the evening is Ms. rachel Reilly.  Rachel works for the organisation Mental Health Ireland, covering the Sligo/Leitrim area, and also comes from a teaching background.  She will give a brief overview on the evening of the importance for us all, both in our role as parents and for ourselves as individuals, in taking care of our mental health.  Rachel will also outline some practical tips on how we can accomplish this and learn new perspectives and strategies that can improve our wellbeing and that of our children.

The NPC Sligo County Branch AGM will take place following the presentation by Ms Rachel Reilly

This event is FREE and All parents are welcome!

Visit from Sligo Rovers:

On Thursday, 10th January we were delighted to welcome some members of the Sligo Rovers Team who visited our school. A great number of the children took the opportunity to dress in red & white and so the Sligo Rovers players - Ross Gaynor and Alan Keane (and of course Keith Dwyer who had organised it all) were greeted by a sea of red & white!!!  They also brought along the League trophy which was amazing.  Congratulations to James Keegan (4th class) who was presented with a special jersey by the Sligo Rovers team which added to the occasion.  Many thanks to all who organised the visit!

GAAmigos

Pat Kilcoyne visited the school on Monday 17th December to facilitate the "GAAmigos Inter Schools Skills Competition". Well done to the following pupils who have made it to the next round of the competition:

A visit from Joe

As Christmas approaches we are fortunate again this year to have Joe Kennedy coming to the school to sing some Christmas Carols and talk to the children about the true meaning of Christmas.  The sessions will take place throughout the day on Monday, 17th December

 

Drumming Workshop

A Drumming Workshop for all pupils from Junior Infants - 6th class inclusive will take place on Wednesday, 12th December.  The sessions will be given by Mr. Peter Currane, and will offer the pupils the opportunity to learn percussion skills, try some Samba drumming and explore African Drumming beats.  It should be a wonderful day!

 

Science Week 

A Science Fair will be held in Sligo IT on Sunday, November 11th from 12noon to 6pm (marking the beginning of Science Week). A group of students from St. Teresa's National School will be displaying experiments at the "Primary Science Display" on Sunday, 11th Nov. (from 12.30pm to 2.30pm). We wish these students every success.

Physical Education:      P.E. class will take place on Thursdays in Ballintogher Hall. Please note that your child is required to take their runners to school in order to participate in Physical Education class. White – soled / non-marking runners are to be worn.
